Tribute to Steve from Takumba RiA Lawal

2002

I used to come to Lords with my best cricket friend Cath.  My health started to deteriorate and one day I was in the Grandstand, but I couldn’t cope with the one lift and I felt stuck in the crowds.  Cath went wandering to see if she could find a way to help me and in passing the Warner Stand she bumped into Steve.  He listened to the stress in her voice and followed her round to the Grandstand and took me down in the lift to the grass area by the Pavilion.  I sat on a chair and felt so cared for.  When I was leaving I gave him a great big hug.
From that day in 2002 when I went to Lords if there was a space I would sit beside him. During breaks we always had great conversations about life in our worlds.  Steve was so gentle, learned and kind and I loved his smile.  Finally being wheelchair bound in 2010, Steve directed me to the Mount Stand where I met David Winskill.  Steve and David have a special place in my heart.
I feel so lucky to have met Steve because if I hadn’t met him I would probably have stopped going to Lords.  His passion for access to all made a difference for many people beyond me.
